Maggie Kang, the creator of the popular animated film KPop Demon Hunters, has said she is not interested in making a live-action version of the movie. In an interview with BBC on October 11, she explained that the story, humor, and tone are best suited for animation. She said that bringing the characters into a real-world setting would feel too grounded and would not capture the essence of the film.
Since its release on Netflix in late June, KPop Demon Hunters has become a global phenomenon. The film quickly gained popularity and became Netflix’s most-watched movie to date. Viewers were drawn not only to the visuals and story but also to the music. The soundtrack broke records, with four songs from the movie reaching the Billboard Hot 100 top 10.
The lead single, Golden, stayed at number one for eight consecutive weeks. The film’s popularity also extended to theaters. A sing-along version of the movie, released in late August, earned $18 million in its opening weekend. This showed the strong fan interest and the movie’s broad appeal.
Kang emphasized that the animated format allows for a unique style of comedy and storytelling that would be difficult to replicate in live-action. Fans will have to enjoy the movie as it was originally made, in animation, preserving its humor, energy, and creative visuals.
The success of KPop Demon Hunters highlights the growing influence of animation in global cinema. Its impact on music charts and box office shows that animated films can reach wide audiences and create cultural moments similar to live-action hits.
