Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has expressed displeasure over the functioning of the Municipal Corporation (MCD) and said that continuous postponement of Standing Committee meetings is serious negligence. He said in a warning tone that if the committee remained inactive, it would be impossible to resolve issues to the public. CM Gupta said that the responsibility of MCD is not limited to administrative work only, but it is also to public service and efficient implementation of policy decisions.

He directed the officials that the Standing Committee meetings should be held regularly, so that decisions on matters like sanitation, drainage, parks and infrastructure can be taken on time. The Chief Minister also said that the Delhi government is committed to providing accountable governance to the people, and laxity or procrastination will not be tolerated at any level.

Warning and responsibility to officials

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta gave a strict warning to the Municipal Corporation (MCD) officials and said that the MCD will now have to make concrete and result-oriented plans for the overall development of Delhi and improvement in civic amenities. He clearly said that “the government is ready to extend full cooperation, but for this the MCD will also have to fulfill its responsibility.”

CM Gupta said that the development work of the capital is being affected due to inaction of MCD and continuous postponement of meetings. He directed the officials to work on schemes to cleanliness, road repair, drainage and public health on priority. The Chief Minister bluntly said, “If the MCD does not work properly, then do not expect cooperation from the government. Negligence in matters to public interest is not acceptable under any circumstances.”

He said that playing with public interests will not be tolerated at any cost. The Chief Minister made this comment when he was informed about the pending problems of DBC (Domestic Breeding Checkers) employees working in MCD. Expressing displeasure, CM Gupta directed the officials to resolve the demands and problems of DBC employees immediately, so that the work to prevention of dengue, malaria and other diseases is not affected. Delhi government is fully committed to public health, cleanliness and civic amenities, but MCD will also have to fulfill its responsibility. “If officers and employees do not work seriously in the public interest, strict action will be taken against them,” Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

Urban Development Minister’s displeasure

Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood has also attacked MCD in strong words. He said that the government released special funds to improve the sanitation system, but it is not being utilized properly. Expressing displeasure, Minister Sood said, “When both resources and budget are available, then why is filth visible in the streets and colonies of Delhi? The public tax money is for the convenience of the public, and not to remain buried in the files.”

Focus on cleanliness and civic amenities

For the last few months, complaints have been continuously coming to light in many areas of Delhi regarding cleanliness, garbage management and mosquito-borne diseases. In view of these circumstances, both Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood have expressed strong displeasure over the working style of MCD.

The government says that negligence on issues to public health and hygiene will not be tolerated. While the Chief Minister raised questions on the inaction of the MCD Standing Committee, Minister Sood made it clear that the government has released funds to improve the sanitation system, but they are not being utilized properly.

According to sources, complaints like non-collection of garbage, delay in cleaning of drains and mosquito infestation are increasing in many wards. Due to this, the government has warned the MCD that now the decision making process will have to be expedited and the focus will have to be increased on cleanliness and civic amenities in every ward.
