Pakistans hopes of a historic first win over England in Womens ODIs were crushed by rain as their ICC Womens World Cup match at R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday ended with no result.
What happened in the match?
Chasing a revised target of 113 runs in 31 overs (via DLS method) Pakistan were in a strong position at 34 without loss in 6.4 overs when the rain returned and forced the umpires to stop the game permanently. Both teams were awarded one point each a result that badly affects Pakistan’s chances of reaching the semifinals especially as this was their third match washed out by rain in the tournament.
How did Pakistan perform?
Earlier in the match Pakistan captain Fatima Sana delivered an outstanding bowling performance picking up 4 wickets for just 27 runs. She helped her team put pressure on England right from the start as the match had already been reduced to 31 overs per side due to rain delays.
After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first under cloudy skies Fatima used swing and seam movement expertly dismissing Amy Jones captain Heather Knight and star all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt in her first spell. Diana Baig had earlier bowled Tammy Beaumont leaving England struggling at 39 for 4 in just 6.4 overs.
England tried to recover with a small partnership between Emma Lamb and Sophia Dunkley who added 15 runs together. But Sadia Iqbal struck twice bowling Lamb and trapping Dunkley lbw taking the score to 79 for 7 after 25 overs.
A long rain delay followed lasting nearly three hours after which play resumed with both teams now having 31 overs each. England’s Charlie Dean (33) and Emily Arlott (21 run out) put together a crucial 46-run stand for the eighth wicket pushing the score past 130. Dean was out in the last over and England ended their innings at 133 for 9.
Due to England losing 9 wickets the DLS method adjusted Pakistan’s target to 113. When play resumed openers Muneeba Ali (9) and Omaima Sohail (19) gave Pakistan a solid start** reaching 34 without loss. Unfortunately rain interrupted again and the match couldn’t continue.
With another abandoned match Pakistan now face a tough road ahead as they must win all their remaining games to stay in the race for the semifinals.
