Fans of the 2018 BBC drama The Split are in for a treat, as a spin-off featuring a fresh narrative and new characters is on its way.
The BBC has revealed this week that filming has commenced in Manchester for the new six-part legal series, crafted by Ursula Rani Sarma.
Unforgotten star Sanjeev Bhaskar, who is currently on a popular Channel 4 show, has been confirmed to join the cast alongside Ritu Arya. They will portray father-daughter lawyer duo, Aria and Dhruv Kishan.
The Split Up delves into the electrifying world of Manchester's high-net-worth divorce circuit, centring around a formidable British South Asian family firm, Kishan Law.
Recognised as the go-to firm for the city's elite, rising star Aria is primed and ready to take over the leading role from her father, reports the Manchester Evening News.
However, when disaster strikes, Dhruv begins to question whether his daughter can, or should, shoulder the responsibility alone.
The show's synopsis reveals: "Aria's relationship is placed under scrutiny too, with the wedding for long-term partner Neal (Danny Ashok) on the horizon.
"But, with their personal and professional so entwine,d it's unclear if their relationship can withstand any more pressure - a problem further compounded when a former secret flame (Dimitri Leonidas) arrives in Manchester unexpectedly.
"Alongside her siblings Maya (Aysha Kala) and Kav (Arian Nik), Aria must navigate the splits that divide family and those we love - and ask herself: who should you live your life for?"
BBC audiences will witness Aysha Kala, Arian Nik, Danny Ashok, Dimitri Leonidas, Mawaan Rizwan, Sindhu Vee, Shalini Peiris, and Tom Forbes featuring in the programme.
Several notable guest performers, including Lenny Henry and Jane Horrocks, are also scheduled to feature in The Split Up.
Discussing the forthcoming drama, programme creator Ursula Rani Sarma remarked: "Having admired The Split and Abi Morgan for years, I was honoured to be asked to bring The Split Up to life.
"As a writer passionate about representation, it's a dream come true to place a contemporary British South Asian family centre stage. Diversity deepens our understanding, enriches our stories, and reflects the true fabric of our society.
"It's thrilling to watch our amazing cast, led by Ritu and Sanjeev, bring the Kishan family to life. I can't wait for audiences to meet them and to witness the drama as it unfolds."
It's not yet been confirmed when The Split Up will air on TV.
