Ricky Hatton "appeared well" when he was visited by his family just days before his death, a Coroner's Court heard on Thursday (October 16).

An inquest led by Alison Mutch at South Manchester's Coroner's Court in Stockport heard a provisional cause of death as 'hanging' on Thursday morning. A full inquest will also be held on March 20, 2026.

Manager and long-time friend of the 'hitman', Paul Speak found Hatton 'unresponsive' when he visited his home in Gee Cross, Hyde, on September 14. The two were set to make their way to Manchester Airport to fly out to Dubai.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that Hatton had passed away in a statement. They also revealed that there were believed to be no suspicious circumstances and referred his death to the coroner.

At the hearing, it was explained that Hatton was last seen by family members two days before he was found, where he 'appeared well.' He was then said to have 'returned home', but the following day, he failed to attend an event he was due to go to.

No details of said event were shared with the court. On Hatton's passing, Speak earlier told Boxing News Magazine: "The lights weren't on, which I thought was strange. I thought he'd overslept, but it's not unusual. People do oversleep. So, I went inside – I have a key – shouting, 'Rick, Rick, wake up!'

"I heard music coming from upstairs, so I went upstairs...I took a look at him...I had to take some time to process it. I was in a state of shock and confusion and loss and many more emotions. Then I called the police and the ambulance. But I firmly believe he didn't intend to do it. It's for the coroner to determine, but he had it all to live for."

It comes after Hatton's funeral took place last Friday (October 10) at Manchester Cathedral. Thousands of mourners lined the streets of Hyde and Manchester, as the boxing legend's cortege made its way to his resting place, stopping off at numerous locations close to Hatton on the way.

The procession set off from the Cheshire Cheese Pub on Friday morning. It then made its way to the Harehill Tavern, where a brand-new mural in Hatton's tribute was unveiled - as well as a floral tribute reading: "There's only one Ricky Hatton."

From there, the cortege, led by a yellow Reliant Robin, passed the New Inn as doves were released in Hatton's honour. It then made its way past Hatton's Gym, Hyde Town Hall, Betta Bodies Gym and the AO Arena, before arriving at the cathedral where thousands more had gathered.

In attendance at the service were a number of Hatton's close friends, including Tyson Fury, Liam Gallagher, Frank Bruno, Tony Bellew, Wayne Rooney, Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Amir Khan, to name a few. The cortege was met with applause as it arrived at the site of the service, before Hatton's sky blue coffin was carried into the cathedral as Blue Moon rang out.

During the service, a number of eulogies were read, including one from close friend, Adam Smith - in which, the Sky Sports boxing commentator described Hatton as: "Both a boxing sporting icon and a working-class hero."

After the service, Hatton's cortege stopped off at the Etihad Stadium, the home to his beloved Manchester City, before making its way to a private committal attended only by family and his nearest and dearest.
