Renowned Pakistani actor and former romantic lead Ajab Gul has revealed that his entry into the entertainment industry came with strict conditions set by his conservative family — including staying away from women in the industry and refusing to ever portray a transgender character.

Appearing recently on the popular comedy talk show fun nightAjab Gul opened up about his journey, struggles, and personal principles that shaped his decades-long career.

The actor shared that he began his career in 1985 with PTV Peshawar, initially approaching the state broadcaster with aspirations of becoming a writer. However, a producer, impressed by his presence, offered him an acting role instead. Reluctant at first, Ajab Gul stepped into the world of acting — a decision that would eventually bring him fame and respect across television, film, and stage.

“I never intended to become an actor. I just wanted to write,” he said. “But sometimes life chooses a path for you.”

Ajab Gul noted that he worked with PTV for 15 years before officially emerging as a writer in 2000. Though he received widespread recognition, he disclosed that certain people in the industry began sidelining him around 1994, out of jealousy for his popularity. He credited fellow actor Afzal Ahmed for standing by him during this difficult time.

Reflecting on his values, Gul stated that he deliberately avoided scandals and romantic affairs during his career, remaining fully focused on his professional goals. Belonging to a traditional tribal Pashtun family, his entry into showbiz was only approved after he promised to maintain a strict moral code — no relationships with female colleagues and no roles as a transgender character.

He even turned down a major role in the hit drama Janjal Pura because it required him to portray a transgender individual, a role he declined out of respect for his family’s conditions.

Despite these limitations, Ajab Gul built a respected career, proving that discipline and dedication can still lead to success in showbiz.
