India’s top men’s doubles team Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty booked a spot in the semifinals while Lakshya Sen was knocked out in the men’s singles quarterfinal at the Denmark Open Super 750 badminton tournament on Friday.
The world championship bronze medalists overcame Indonesia’s unseeded pair Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Rahmat Hidayat in a tight three-game match winning 21-15 18-21 21-16 in 65 minutes.
Satwik and Chirag will now face either the eighth-seeded Chinese pair Chen Bo Yang and Yi Liu or Japan’s Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in the semifinals.
Earlier in the tournament the Indian duo defeated Scotland’s Christopher and Matthew Grimley in the first round followed by a win over Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan of Chinese Taipei in the second.
In contrast Lakshya Sen who had shocked world number two and home favorite Anders Antonsen in straight games the previous day couldn’t keep up his form. He lost 9-21 14-21 to seventh seed Alex Lanier of France in a 44-minute match.
Lanier dominated the first game racing to an 8-2 lead with five points in a row as Lakshya struggled with errors and poor net play. In the second game Lakshya started well and led 3-1 but Lanier bounced back strongly winning nine straight points to move ahead 10-4 and finished the match comfortably.
