The truth about the historical Adina Masjid located in Malda district of West Bengal started coming out on social media. After Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan shared pictures of his visit to the mosque, several users and BJP leaders revealed that the site was earlier ‘Adinath Temple’, which was demolished and converted into a mosque by Muslim invaders.

Hundreds of reactions started coming on this post of Pathan. Many users shared pictures of the sculptures present on the walls of the mosque and wrote that this is evidence that earlier there used to be a grand Hindu ‘Adinath Temple’ in place of the mosque.

One user wrote, “Dear Yusuf Pathan, the site where you are standing is the remains of ‘Adinath Temple’, one of the largest Hindu temples in India, which was demolished by Islamic invaders and converted into a mosque. The attached photographs bear testimony to the same. The time has come to correct this historical injustice and restore the dignity of the temple.”

Another post shared a sculpture on the walls of the mosque and wrote, “This sculpture on the wall of the Adina Mosque gives a glimpse of a Hindu deity, possibly Lord Ganesha. Is this proof that there was once an Adinath temple here? The layers of history need to be revisited.”

The state’s ruling party BJP also joined this online campaign. Retweeting Yusuf Pathan’s post from BJP’s state account, he wrote, “It was not a mosque, but ‘Adinath Temple’, which was presented as a mosque in history.”

The controversy has not only rekindled the history versus heritage debate on social media, but has also deepened the political and religious polarization in West Bengal.
