When is Dhanteras: The festival of Diwali is coming in just a few days. This holy festival starts with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Dooj. This festival is celebrated every year on the Trayodashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. On this day, Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber are worshiped with special rituals. Also, shopping on the day of Dhanteras is also considered very auspicious.
This year there is some confusion regarding the date of Dhanteras. According to the scriptures, Trayodashi Tithi will start from 12:20 pm on Saturday, October 18 and will continue till 1:52 pm on Sunday, October 19. Therefore, this year you can celebrate Dhanteras on both 18th and 19th October. If for some reason you are not able to make purchases on 18th, you can make purchases on 19th October also.

Dhanteras is also called Dhantrayodashi. It is believed that at the time of churning of the ocean, Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the nectar pot. On this day, there is special significance of worshiping Lord Dhanvantari, Vishnuji, Mata Lakshmi, Kuber Devta and Yamraj.
There is a tradition of buying things like utensils, gold, silver, broom on the day of Dhanteras. It is believed that purchases made on this day increase wealth and bring prosperity to the house. Especially purchasing gold and silver is considered auspicious.
