With about one-third of all food going to waste worldwide, finding simple ways to store food correctly to prevent spoilage will help prevent wastage in your household. Over-purchasing food is one major reason for food waste, but improper storage of many fresh items is also a huge reason why food spoils.
Now, experts have shared tips on one particular vegetable you should never store potatoes next to, as it will cause spoilage quickly. The waste disposal experts at InSinkErator have revealed how to properly store certain foods - and they said you should "never store potatoes near onions". They've also shared tips on how to correctly store food to prevent spoilage for three other items that are the most incorrectly stored foods by Brits' in typical households.
The experts at InSinkErator said when storing potatoes, the fridge is not recommended. Instead, store potatoes in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place away from light and heat to prevent sprouting.
Don't store potatoes near onions
"Also, be sure not to store potatoes near onions, as they release ethylene gas, which can speed up spoilage", the food waste professionals have said.
This ethylene gas can cause potatoes to sprout and onions to ferment, leading to both food items going off quicker than if they are stored apart.
Leave ginger unpeeled
Ginger, if stored correctly, can stay fresh for weeks, even months. To store ginger, be sure to keep it unpeeled and in a cool, dry place. You can store it in a fridge - however, in a paper bag or a tight container.
Don't store onions in the fridge
For those who have been keeping onions in the fridge, you've been storing them all wrong. When exposed to moisture, onions are likely to spoil faster. Onions should only be stored in a cool, dry place like a cupboard or pantry.
Don't wash strawberries
Whilst many may wash and cut their strawberries before storing them, they are best left whole and dry. Be sure to store your strawberries in the fridge to preserve their freshness. If stored correctly, strawberries should subsequently stay fresh for seven days or longer.
Store garlic in a dry, cool place
Similar to onions, you should never put garlic in the fridge. When garlic is exposed to moisture and light, mould begins to grow. Instead, store garlic in a cool, dry place with plenty of air circulation.
