Meerut: Meerut, the historical city of Uttar Pradesh, will now not only be known as the land of sports equipment and revolution, but this city is also creating a new identity for its unique tasting chaat. This decades old chaat will now be seen on the walls of Namo Bharat station also. When NCRTC planned to give local identity to the stations of Namo Bharat trains, Meerut’s famous chaat was included as the symbolic identity of the city.

The aroma of chaat can be felt at every turn in the streets of Meerut. The taste of Golgappa, Dahi Bhalla, Aloo Chaat and Raj Kachori is the first choice of the people. It is said that Meerut’s chaat has such a magic of spices that once eaten, it forces people to return again and again.

Local shopkeepers here say that the spices used in Meerut’s chaat are prepared in-house – which includes a special mixture of yellow Golki salt, garam masala, black pepper, cumin, coriander and ginger-green chillies. Along with all this, sweet and sour amavat and tamarind chutney, boiled peas, fresh curd and green coriander further enhance the taste.

The interesting thing is that even today chaat is served on eco-friendly Maldhan leaves and not in disposable plates. This tradition is not only an example of taste but also of respect for culture and nature.

Chaat started in Meerut around the 1960s. Old shopkeepers say that this tradition has been going on for three generations now. Even today many families make chaat using the same old recipes and methods.

Not only the local people are crazy about the taste of Meerut’s chaat, but also the tourists coming from India and abroad. Master Chef Sanjeev Kapoor has also praised the chaat of Meerut. Even foreign guests visiting the Roman Catholic Church in Sardhana do not return without tasting Abu Lane’s chaat.

The colorful artworks on the walls of Namo Bharat station will now tell the story of this taste – showing that Meerut is not just a city of history, but also a city of taste.
