Doha. In a high-level talks held between Pakistan and Afghanistan in Doha, the capital of Qatar, an agreement has been reached regarding ceasefire with immediate effect. Representatives of both the countries will meet in Doha and Islamabad in the next phase to discuss effective implementation of the ceasefire. The border conflict between the two countries that has been going on for the last fortnight was becoming increasingly serious, resulting in the deaths of military personnel as well as civilians from both sides.
According to a statement issued by Qatar’s Foreign Ministry on social media platform Qatar has expressed hope that this agreement will establish regional stability by reducing the increasing tension on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
High level representatives of both the countries participated in this conversation held in Doha. According to Gulf News, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Intelligence Chief General Asim Malik participated from Pakistan’s side. According to Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, a high-level delegation led by Defense Minister Mullah Muhammad Yacob attended the talks which also included intelligence chief Abdul Haq Waqiq.
Before the talks, Pakistan Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that the talks will focus on taking measures to end cross-border terrorism from Afghanistan and restoration of peace and stability on the border. The statement praised Qatar’s mediation initiative and expressed hope that the discussions will contribute to achieving peace and stability in the region.
The conflict that has been going on between the two countries for the last fortnight was taking a terrible turn when three cricketers from Afghanistan were killed in an air strike amid the ceasefire. The Afghan government claimed that Pakistan had violated the ceasefire and targeted civilians. Whereas Pakistan alleged that it targeted terrorist camps operating in the border areas of Afghanistan.
