In India, BIS i.e. Bureau of Indian Standard checks the purity of gold and now customers can check the purity of gold digitally through the BIS Care app. So customers can make sure that the gold they buy is really pure or not. Hallmarking of gold on jewelery and artefacts has been made mandatory in India from June 2024. There are three important marks on any Hallmark item. These include the BIS logo, a purity symbol such as 22K916 (where 916 indicates 91.6% purity) and the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code. HUID is a six-digit alphanumeric ID used for online verification of jewellery.

Register with mobile number – Open the app and complete the basic registration by entering your mobile number.
Select Vierfy HUID – Tap on the Vierfy HUID option on the home screen.
Enter the HUID code – Find the six digit HUID code that appears on the gold jewelery you have purchased and type it into this app.
Now you will see some information on the screen. including jeweller’s name and registration, hallmarking center name, type and purity of the item purchased by you,
If the information you see in the app matches the jewelry you bought and the information on the bill, then the gold you bought is pure.
If the information about the jewelry you purchased does not match with the information displayed in the app, you can file a complaint by going to the complaint section in the app.

If you don’t want to download the app, you can also avail the verification service on the official website. Here you just need to enter the six digit code and after that you will see the registration and purity details of the jewellery. The online hallmark test will only work if the jewelry has a HUID on it and can be clearly read. Items purchased before June 2021 may not have a HUID code.
