Suryakumar Yadav on ODI Captaincy: There are continuous discussions going on regarding the captaincy in the Indian cricket team. After the removal of Rohit Sharma in the ODI format, when Shubman Gill was given the new responsibility, reactions of many big players came to the fore. In this context, now the statement of Team India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav is in the headlines. Surya has openly said that if he had performed a little better in ODIs, perhaps he too could have got this opportunity.
Actually, Suryakumar Yadav has been out of the ODI team for some time. He has not played any 50-over match since the 2023 World Cup final. At the same time, his consistently excellent performance in T20 cricket led him to the captaincy, but he could not show his colors in ODIs.
During a conversation in a podcast, Suryakumar Yadav openly expressed his feelings. He said, “Now I think that if I had done well in the ODI format, like I am doing in T20, then maybe I would have got the ODI captaincy. Earlier I had never thought about it, but now I feel that I could have done a little better.”
Surya (Suryakumar Yadav) further said that he does not see much difference between the two formats. “The only difference in the format is 30 overs, the color of the ball is the same and the jersey is also almost the same,” he said jokingly.
Suryakumar Yadav made his ODI debut in 2021, but could score only 773 runs in 37 matches. At the same time, his influence continues in T20 cricket, where he has made his mark as a captain by playing strong innings continuously. He took charge of the T20 team by defeating Hardik Pandya and has now emerged as a reliable leader in Indian cricket.
Although he definitely regrets missing out on ODI captaincy, Surya clearly said that his efforts will continue. “I will still try. I will give my 100 percent. Captaincy has always been my dream, and I will continue to work hard for it,” he said. Despite being out of Team India, Surya’s outlook is positive. He believes that only demonstration can open doors again.
