A new viral trend has taken over schools across the United States. Children are yelling “6-7!” — a phrase that makes little sense but has become the latest obsession among Gen Alpha students.
Teachers say it happens everywhere — in classrooms, hallways, and cafeterias. Some students shout it when a teacher says the number six or seven. Others just say it for fun.
“It’s like a wave spreading through every class,” said Gabe Dannenbring, a middle school teacher from South Dakota. “If you mention 6 or 7, the whole class screams back ‘6-7!’”
The phrase has no clear meaning, but experts say it started from a viral TikTok trend. It first appeared in a song called Doot Doot (6 7) by Philadelphia rapper Skrilla. Later, a young basketball player, Taylen Kinney, popularized it with a hand gesture that spread rapidly across social media.
Soon, the phrase appeared in sports highlight videos and memes. A clip of a young fan shouting “6-7!” at a basketball game went viral, and the internet quickly turned it into a global inside joke.
Linguists say this trend isn’t just random noise. It shows how young people build connection through shared language. “It’s a way to belong,” said communication expert Gail Fairhurst. “Even if it means nothing, it makes them feel part of something.”
Teachers, however, are finding it challenging. Many are banning the phrase, while others are using it to their advantage. Some turn it into songs or class jokes to calm students down.
Dannenbring said the best way to stop it is to join in. “If you ignore it, it gets worse. If you play along, it dies out in seconds.”
Experts say every generation has its nonsense trends — from “Skibidi” to “rizz.” What makes “6-7” different is its total lack of meaning. It’s fun precisely because it’s pointless.
Still, the trend might soon fade as adults catch on. In some schools, students have already started using another random number — “41” — as a new chant.
For now, “6-7” continues to echo through classrooms across America — loud, funny, and completely meaningless, just the way kids like it.
