PIL in SC for AI: The uncontrolled use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is seriously violating the privacy, dignity and fundamental rights of citizens. In view of this danger, the petitioners have approached the Supreme Court. The PIL demands that the central government immediately create a comprehensive regulatory and licensing framework for AI technology.
In view of the rapidly increasing misuse of Artificial Intelligence technology in the country, the doors of the Supreme Court have been approached. Through a PIL, it has been demanded from the court to direct the Central Government to immediately prepare a comprehensive regulatory and licensing framework for AI technology.
The petitioners argue that uncontrolled use of AI-based systems is seriously violating the privacy, dignity and fundamental rights of citizens.
The petition specifically expresses concern over the increase in misuse of deepfake technology.
According to the petition, people’s voice, face and behavior are being copied using AI-based systems without any control or accountability, which is called ‘deepfake’. In recent months, this technology has targeted not only ordinary citizens but also journalists, celebrities and big personalities. This misuse is having serious consequences, which include tarnishing of people’s image, increase in cyber crime, blackmailing and spread of fake news.
To reduce these growing threats, the PIL has appealed to the Supreme Court to give several important directions. A primary demand is that the Central Government be directed to create a National AI Regulatory Body. The main function of this institution will be to decide the accountability of platforms to AI technology. This organization will monitor deepfakes and other harmful AI content and take strict action against them in case of violations.
The petitioners have filed this PIL under Article 32 of the Indian Constitution, which specifically seeks to issue a ‘Writ of Mandamus’. Through this legal process, there is a demand to force the Central Government to make concrete laws to immediately control the misuse of AI.

The penetration of AI technology in India has increased rapidly in the last one year. In the last few months, a large number of audios, videos and photos have surfaced on social media which are completely AI generated deepfakes. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the petitioners have requested the Supreme Court to transfer all the cases to AI and deepfakes already pending in various High Courts to it, so that uniform guidelines can be framed on the subject across the country.
