Speaking ahead of the first ODI against Australia, Kohli opened up about the long break he took in London with his wife and family. In an interview with Adam Gilchrist and Ravi Shastri, Kohli revealed that retirement from Test cricket gave him an opportunity to spend more time at home and pursue his personal life.
Kohli admitted that he had not got a proper break while playing international cricket in the last 15 years and he was really happy to spend some quality time in London with his wife and two children. Virat Kohli said, “Yes, it’s been a long time since I retired from Test cricket and like I was saying, I’m just getting life in order. I haven’t been able to do that for so many years. It’s been a really beautiful phase to be able to spend quality time at home with my kids and family. Something I’ve really enjoyed.”
He further said, “To be honest, with the amount of cricket I have played in the last 15 to 20 years, I have rarely had a real break. When you combine international cricket with the IPL, I have probably played more matches than almost anyone in the last 15 years. So, this break was really refreshing for me.”
During his break in London, questions were raised over Virat Kohli’s fitness standards but Kohli has allayed those concerns by being in top shape and saying that he is the fittest he has ever been. Kohli said, “I feel as fit as ever. If not more fit. There is a real freshness when you know the game so well mentally and just focus on the physical preparation. At this stage of my career, I understand that if my body is fit and my reflexes are sharp, the awareness of the game is already there. My body just has to catch up with it and that is something that I need to maintain.” I work hard for.”
