A unique hotel built in a mine

ChinaLocated in the Songjiang District of Shanghai, InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel is an excellent example of modern architecture and engineering. The hotel is built in an old mine, 88 meters deep. That is why it is also called as “quarry hotel” or “mining hotel”.

Why was the name Waterfall Hotel?

The design of this hotel is very attractive. 16 floors of this 18-storey hotel are underground, while two floors are under water. In front of the hotel is a 90 meter high artificial waterfall, which adds more to its beauty. It is because of this unique waterfall that this hotel got the name “Waterfall Hotel”.

4 thousand crore project

The history of this place is also interesting. In the 1950s, the mine was used by the Japanese as a bunker during the war. The mine was later partially filled with water to form an artificial lake. In 2006, a Shanghai-based property group conceived the idea of building a hotel on the site, and the project began in 2009. About 4 thousand crore rupees were spent to complete the entire project.

‘Inverted Groundscraper’ – A hotel built upside down

Some of the famous architecture firms of the world were selected for the design of this hotel. Designed according to the principles of Feng Shui, the hotel is called an “inverted groundscraper” because it is built below, not above. When viewed from above, the shape of this building looks like the letter “S” in English. From an eco-friendly point of view, this is a single-use plastic free hotel. It is also a ‘brownfield revival project’ — that is, the re-use of an abandoned site.

A confluence of luxury and adventure

Staying in this hotel is not only a comfort but also an exciting experience. There are cliffside villas, as well as luxurious underwater suites, from where guests can enjoy a beautiful view of the lake directly through the glass walls. The hotel has a total of 337 rooms and each room has modern amenities like voice-control system.
