Skirting boards will stay spotless and dust-free if you do a 10-second task once a month

Skirting boards seem to catch every speck of dust in a home, no matter how many times you wipe them down, but there is actually a quick way to keep them clean for a long time. Homes tend to become dusty in autumn as radiators will warm up a room, but they also dry out the air, which can cause static electricity to build up on plastic and wooden surfaces.

Skirting boards tend to hold a lot of static charge, which acts like a magnet to attract any debris on the floor and cause it to stick firmly to the wall. Even if you clean skirting boards regularly, they will still be covered in dust after a day if you do not deal with the static electricity, which will lead to your home feeling stuffy and unkept. However, one expert at Central Skirting has shared that keeping dust away is simple, as you just need to clean your skirting boards with dryer sheets.

The expert said: "A surprising but effective way to clean your skirting boards is to use tumble dryer sheets! They can easily wipe up dust and dirt, and as they are naturally scented, they leave a great smell in the home too."

Dryer sheets are designed to neutralise static charge on clothes so they do not clump together in the tumble dryer.

This same anti-static effect can also help reduce static buildup on other surfaces, so dust and other debris will not be able to stick to a skirting board.

They also leave behind a light coating that will continue to protect skirting boards, keeping dusty grime away and making cleaning them much easier in the future.

You also need to use dryer sheets to clean skirting boards once a month to prevent static buildup, but you may have to do it every two weeks if you have pets or if you have a carpeted floor, as they attract a lot of debris.

How to use dryer sheets to keep dust away from skirting boards

To begin, you need to clean any dust already sitting on your skirting boards. Spray them with a surface cleaner, or you can make a homemade cleaner with white vinegar.

White vinegar is acidic and will break down any sticky dust quickly, so you do not have to spend a lot of time wiping down the surface. You just need to mix one cup of white vinegar and one cup of warm water in an empty spray bottle and wipe it down with a cloth.

Once the skirting boards are completely clean, take a used dryer sheet and run it along them. Do not overdo it. Using multiple sheets with too much dryer sheet residue will attract dust instead of repelling it.

After a few seconds of wiping down, your skirting boards should repel dust for up to a month, so you can keep your home clean without much effort.
