Amazon Web Services (AWS) crashed on Monday (October 20), causing a significant portion of the internet to go down with it. Down Detector reported issues affecting a wide range of services including Ring Doorbells, Snapchat, Roblox, Canva, Fortnite, Duolingo Slack, Vodafone, Signal, BT, EE and Sky. Some banks, including Halifax, Llyods and Bank of Scotland, have also been affected. The platform predicts that some 1,000 companies have been affected worldwide.

Even the ability to submit a support ticket to Amazon was affected, with users being greeted by a "service page is currently unavailable" message. A service health update by AWS posted at 9.26am on Monday said: "We can confirm significant error rates for requests made to the DynamoDB endpoint in the US-EAST-1 Region. This issue also affects other AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region as well. During this time, customers may be unable to create or update Support Cases. Engineers were immediately engaged and are actively working on both mitigating the issue, and fully understanding the root cause."

Amazon confirmed that the underlying problem was fixed at around 12 noon on Monday. The issues were caused by a problem with companies connecting to data services at its data centres in northern Virginia.
