Autumn is when lots of party food begin to appear in supermarkets, and many people enjoy treating themselves to some fancy cheeses to make a charcuterie board or cook into pasta. However, even everyday cheeses can be the really expensive, and there is nothing worse than spending a lot of money on cheese only for it to spoil within a few days.
Cheese is actually difficult to keep in the fridge as it highly sensitive to humidity, as too little will dry it out so it becomes stale while too much can encourage mould. However, one expert at Over the Moon Dairy has shared a simple method to perfectly store cheese so it remains fresh and full of flavour - and all you need is some baking paper. They said: "The goal is to let the cheese breathe while keeping it from drying out, so your best bet is to wrap it in a finely porous material, such as cheese paper or baking paper, or breathable plastic wrap made especially for cheese."
If you search how to store cheese, then many experts will recommend spending money on wax paper or speciality wraps, but this can be counterproductive if you are trying to save money.
Baking paper is fine to use as it is a breathable material that allows some air to circulate around the cheese to stop moisture building up on the surface, which can attract bacteria and mould spores.
However, it also acts as a barrier to lock in just enough moisture to prevent the cheese hardening so it does not harden and become stale or crusty.
It is a really easy way to make cheese last a long time without spending any money, so you can shop for your favourite cheeses without worrying about them spoiling.
All you need to do is wrap a cheese loosely in baking paper, then place it in a food storage box with a lid.
The expert added: "The baking paper helps keep the cheese from drying out, while the loose coating of plastic (or box) holds in some moisture, allowing airflow in and around the cheese."
Then, store the box in a bottom drawer of your fridge as it is designed to have a more stable temperature and humidity level than the main area, which helps keep cheese fresh.
Make sure to change the wrapping every few days or at least once a week to prevent bacteria and your cheese should last a lot longer than it normally would.
Hard cheeses will last a month or longer while semi-firm cheese will last two to three weeks. Softer cheeses like mozzarella are designed to be eaten within a few days so it is not recommended storing them for a long time.
