Heavy Rain Alert: The Regional Meteorological Center has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu for the next few days, due to which an orange alert has been issued for seven districts including Chennai. The Meteorological Department has said that there is a strong possibility of a low pressure area forming over the south-eastern Bay of Bengal between October 21 and 24, which will bring widespread rainfall in the state.
According to the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC-Chennai), a low pressure area is already formed over the south-eastern Arabian Sea. Along with this, an upper air circulation is persisting over the southern Andaman Sea and adjoining south-eastern Bay of Bengal. This weather system is likely to turn into a low pressure area and move west-northwestwards within the next 24 hours. It is expected to strengthen further over southwest and west-central Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours.
The weather office has issued an orange alert for seven districts (Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Cuddalore), warning of extremely heavy rainfall on Tuesday (October 21).
The main phase of rainfall is expected to begin tomorrow, Wednesday. For October 22, the RMC has extended orange alert in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Ranipet and Tiruvannamalai districts. During this period, heavy rains have also been predicted in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Tirupattur districts.
On October 23, very heavy rain has been warned in Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Ranipet and Vellore.
Additionally, 11 districts including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram are expected to receive heavy rainfall on Tuesday. By October 24, heavy rains are likely in many districts including Tirupattur, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Dharmapuri.

RMC said that the sky in Chennai will be generally cloudy and there is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorm in many parts of the city. Authorities have urged people living in low-lying areas to remain alert and avoid waterlogged areas, as incessant rains may cause floods in northern Tamil Nadu and parts of the delta region.
