A historic UK city that claims to be England's oldest has been dealt a devastating blow as a much-loved charity shop will close in just a matter of days. Colchester, the second-largest urban area in Essex, will wave goodbye to Sense Charity Shop this week.

Sense, who have over 100 stores in England and Wales, supports people with deafblindness or complex disabilities, including those with sensory impairments and additional needs. In 2019, Sense even announced plans to open 20 shops in Wales, increasing its presence in the country. However, after serving the local Colchester community for years the store on 41 Crouch Street will soon be shut for good, marking the end of an era.

Shoppers on the hunt for a bargain will need to rush to the store as all items have been reduced to just 25p.

Charity shops are facing a turbulent time at the moment with Cancer Research UK to close nearly 200 stores in the next 18 months.

Issuing a heartfelt Facebook post, shop manager Louise Byford urged customers to pop in one more time to say goodbye.

The post read: "Hello everyone! As you are aware our shop is closing, so as from tomorrow 18th October all items will be 25 pence. We do hope you will pop in, say hi and show your support. You know you will be welcomed with a smile. We look forward to seeing you.

"Our doors will open and close for the last time on 24th October."

In response a wave of disappointed customers expressed their sadness with one saying they had been a frequent shopper at the store for "38 years".

One person wrote: "I work at the rspca prettygate ...I have been following you ..and been a customer for 38 years ...its heartbreaking...and I can't imagine how you are feeling but feel free to come see us we are a great team xx don't be alone we know how you feel xxx you've done the best you can and given your all. Well done, head up charity shop is hard work and unrewarding."

"So sorry to hear this. I know how hard it is. It was lovely to meet you and wish you all the best of luck", added a second.

A third wrote: "Oh Louise, sending so much kindness to you and all the staff and volunteers."
