But after the 7th Pay Commission, all of them were combined into one Dress Allowance. This is credited with the salary of July every year, so that the employees can easily meet the expenses of their uniform.
The latest guidelines of the government show that Central Government Employees joining after July 1, 2025 will also be eligible to get Dress Allowance. Earlier this benefit was available only to old employees. At the same time, there is a rule to recover extra amount from those retiring in October 2025.
But it is a matter of relief that there will be no burden of recovery on those retiring till 30 September 2025. This change is a big step towards making Dress Allowance more fair.
In an old circular issued in June 2025, it was said that Central Government Employees retiring after July 2025 will follow the rules of 2020 only, unless approval is received from the Finance Ministry. Now after the clearance from the Finance Ministry, the decision has been taken – those retiring in the middle of the year will get proportional Dress Allowance according to their service period.

The Postal Department has clearly stated in its latest order that Central Government Employees who join before July 2025 will get Dress Allowance under the old rules till June 2025. The department also admitted that last year’s pending allowance was not included in the July salary of many people.
