Veteran Bollywood actor and comedian Govardhan Asrani has passed away, leaving behind a legacy that spans over five decades. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief and heartfelt tributes from across the Indian film industry.
Actor Akshay Kumar expressed his sorrow on social media platform X, writing that he was “deeply saddened” by the news. He shared that he had met Asrani just a week ago on the sets of the film Animalwhere the veteran actor embraced him warmly.
“I had the honour of working with Asrani ji in films like Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhag, De Dana Dan, Welcome, Bhool Bhulaiyaaand Animal. He was not just a brilliant actor but a man with a golden heart and an unmatched sense of humour,” Akshay wrote in his tribute.
According to Asrani’s manager Babu Bhai Theba, the actor passed away at Nidhi Hospital in the Juhu area of Mumbai. His last rites were held at the Santacruz Crematorium and were attended by close family members.
Asrani is survived by his wife, Manju Asrani, along with his sister and nephew. The couple had no children.
In a career that spanned more than 50 years, Asrani brought life to countless memorable characters in Indian cinema. From emotional roles to laugh-out-loud comedic performances, he earned a special place in the hearts of audiences. His iconic comic timing and unforgettable dialogues continue to be quoted by fans across generations.
