Viewers are set for a real treat with a Channel 4 drama that has been praised as featuring the "best acting on TV". After The Party - starring Robyn Malcolm and Peter Mullan - has previously earned a five-star rating from the Guardian, which described it as "brilliantly executed", and audiences have concurred, with the compelling story being labelled "riveting" and "brilliant".

The celebrated New Zealand series follows the tale of a family thrown into turmoil after teacher Penny (Robyn) believes she witnesses her husband Phil (Peter) behaving inappropriately with their daughter's underage friend. She confronts him at a party before all the guests, resulting in a massive row. Peter maintains his innocence and many people doubt Penny when she reveals what she claims to have seen, but she refuses to back down and her actions gradually begin to isolate those around her, reports the Mirror.

Peter eventually relocates and the drama unfolds five years later, when he returns to town to visit his daughter. The incident in question is revealed through a series of flashbacks from various perspectives throughout the six-part drama.

The series also features Tara Canton, who portrays Grace, the daughter of Penny and Phil.

The supporting ensemble includes Ian Blackburn, Elz Carrad and Dean O'Gorman, who is known for his role as Fili in the Hobbit trilogy.

The gripping story has proved a massive hit with viewers who have dubbed it "a masterpiece".

"Wow... we were reeling with awe and admiration for a knockout drama," one viewer posted online, adding that the lead actors "were inspired and made for a breathtaking performance".

Another viewer chimed in: "Brilliant, so good I didn't want to watch it all as I really didn't want it to be over but just too good to stop. An absolute gem. It doesn't get much better."

An impressed fan gushed after watching the series: "This cannot be the end. I need counselling. The most compelling, astounding story of love, betrayal, manipulation and vindication."

Another viewer praised: "Outstanding performance from all but the STAR of the show without a shadow of a doubt is Robyn Malcolm as Penny... I don't know what the highest acting award is in New Zealand but whatever it is, this lady should be awarded it."

"One of the best TV shows I've seen in a number of years," agreed another viewer.

"Absolutely gripping throughout. Denial, lies, the delicate balance of trust and the fragility of youth.

"Amazing cast, brilliantly directed and produced but I have to say Robyn Malcolm, who plays the leading role as Penny, puts in one of the greatest acting performances that I ever seen."

"Intense and brilliant, and had me hooked from start to finish!" exclaimed another viewer.

After The Party is available on Channel 4.
