Having a baby is a milestone for many people, whether they’re becoming first time parents or already have multiple children. One of the most important decisions parents-to-be have to make is the name of their child.

Some opt for classic and traditional names while others choose monikers that are less heard of. However, this can cause issues as children with unusual names are sometimes teased at school. Some unique names can also be hard to spell or pronounce. Couples often decide on a name for their baby together but they don’t always agree, like one pregnant woman who shared online her husband has a liking for ‘weird names’.

In a post on Reddit, she disclosed she already rejected her partner’s suggestion of Hildegard, saying they are “not nearly German enough.”

The expectant mum then revealed another name her husband is fond of but aired her concerns.

She said: “He really likes Argentine. It literally means silver or silvery. I worry most people will think we're naming our daughter after a country.

“I’m a little torn because it is pretty and follows all the rules I gave him - it’s just a little weird. I’m reminded of a comedy skit about naming a girl Chlamydia because it sounds pretty.”

The mum-to-be went on to say she could come around to this name choice if the baby’s middle name was Star, Stella or something that relates to the meaning of Argentine.

She clarified she and her husband are trying to choose a girl name as they have already decided on the name Elliott if they are having a boy.

They have decided to wait until the baby is born to find out the sex. In the end of her post she asked: “Opinions? Too weird? Too Spanish sounding for a not-at-all Spanish couple? He insists it’s Latin.”

It has garnered more than 200 comments with Reddit users sharing their thoughts. One said: “I feel like Augusta is similar to both but less weird.”

This is the top response with more than 900 upvotes. Another added: “If I met someone with this name, I’d assume their parents were kind of insufferable not gonna lie lol.”

They also gave other suggestions, such as Agnes, Aurelia, Clementine and Genevieve.

A third user commented: “Weird name. Have you considered Delphine?” Someone else responded: “You're right. Argentine is a pretty name, but yes, most people will think you named your child after the country, Argentina.

“Some people will probably even expect a backstory for the name like your child was conceived in the country or you honeymooned there or something.”

A further commenter shared: “I knew a lecturer named Argenta after silver. A bit less likely to be connected to Argentina at least.”
