Meta's messaging app, WhatsApp, is now restricting users and business accounts that repeatedly send messages to unknown people. The company stated that a message limit system will soon be implemented to reduce spam on the platform.

What will change under the new rules?

Now, every message sent by a user or business account will be counted, whether it receives a reply or not. If a message is sent to an unknown person and the person does not respond, that message will be included in the monthly limit.

Alerts upon exceeding the limit

WhatsApp stated that the app will display a pop-up warning when the limit is nearing. This will alert users that they are about to exceed the limit, so their account will not be blocked.

Testing will begin in several countries.

The company is testing this feature in several countries in the coming weeks. Testing will begin soon in some major markets, including India. However, WhatsApp says that this system will not impact ordinary users, as this system is primarily designed to prevent spam.

Why is this step necessary

WhatsApp is no longer just a chat app, but has become a major tool for business and communication. People are bothered by dozens of unknown messages every day, many of which are promotional or spam.

Changes have already been made.
WhatsApp introduced features like marketing message limits and an unsubscribe option in 2024 to help users avoid unnecessary messages. Additionally, earlier this year, the company began implementing broadcast message limits. The company has stated that this pilot is now being expanded to more than 12 countries, including India, where it has over 500 million users.
