Harry Maguire was on hand to head home Manchester United's winner at Liverpool on Sunday but a post on social media praising his exploits with his head were mocked by Sevilla.

The centre-half scored the winning goal at Anfield on Sunday to end his side's decade-long wait for a win on the red half of Merseyside. It isn't the first time Maguire has come up with big goals over recent seasons - one of those being on the European stage.

United enjoyed a stunning comeback in last season's Europa League quarter-final as they scored three times in seven minutes to beat Lyon at Old Trafford. It was Maguire who headed home in the final minute of extra-time to set off jubilant scenes in Manchester.

The Europa League's Twitter page put out the video and referenced how Maguire was renowned for scoring "clutch headers" in the aftermath of his Liverpool exploits.

But the post was somewhat hijacked when it was reposted by Sevilla, who included another video of European action that saw Maguire head into his own net when the Spanish side rescued a game at Old Trafford, drawing 2-2 after they had trailed by two goals.

That was back in Erik ten Hag's time at the club but proved to be a crushing blow. United looked to be cruising to a first-leg win in the knockout stages of the tournament, only for the La Liga outfit to score twice late on thanks to a brace of own goals to ensure parity ahead of the second-leg.

The Spanish side enjoyed a triumphant 3-0 victory back on their own patch to send United packing from Europe. Sevilla were gifted the lead after eight minutes when Youssef En-Nesyri finished following an error from Maguire.

There was talk of Ten Hag looking to offload Maguire during his time in Manchester, but the defender remained and has continued to underline his importance. Ruben Amorim has continued to make use of the England international with his biggest contribution coming on Sunday.

Maguire's future in Manchester remains unclear with the centre-half into the final year of his contract - and no formal offer yet made to the 32-year-old. If the club want to retain the England international they will have to offer him fresh terms.

Given he is now in the final eight months of his deal he could sign a pre-contract with foreign clubs from January 1. The Daily Mail report that regular discussions continue between the club and the player but a decision from the hierarchy is yet to be made.
