The government is preparing to come up with new rules to control rumors spread by AI content. In particular, plans are being made to curb the spread of rumors through social media platforms like Facebook, X and YouTube. New rules are being introduced for social media platforms to better monitor AI-generated content.
In its proposal, the Information Technology Ministry said that fake audio, video and fake photographs spread rapidly on social media platforms. This shows how realistic and misleading content is being created using AI. This content can be used as a ‘weapon’ to spread misinformation during elections to tarnish one’s image, manipulate and commit financial fraud.

As per AI rules, the IT Ministry has prepared a draft and sought feedback from stakeholders till November 6. Stricter rules regarding AI content will increase the accountability of social media platforms. In particular, platforms that have five million (5 million) or more users will be held accountable. These platforms will need to verify the authenticity of such AI-generated fake content and flag them.
Additionally, the new draft rules will also include oversight of AI content creators, from labeling AI-generated content. Any AI-generated video or audio clip should contain at least 10 percent real content. Also, user authentication should be made mandatory before uploading such content. Additionally, technical limitations must be considered before uploading AI content to social media.
The use of deepfake videos has skyrocketed thanks to AI-generated content. In this regard, recently Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had said in Parliament that photographs of prominent people are being misused, affecting people’s personal lives. He added that action is being taken against such content. “Our aim is to find out whether these contents are real or created by AI,” he said.
