No trip is complete without a railway station; whether youre reaching your destination or catching a train the railway station is always part of the journey. India has 7439 railway stations through which scores of trains pass each day. While some railway stations are small some are large some have many platforms and some have longer platforms.
In this article we are discussing a railway station that has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. This is the biggest railway station in the world where one can find passengers going to 44 platforms just to board a train.
The largest train station in the world is in the USA. The station features 44 platforms and 67 railway tracks. It serves approximately 150000 passengers each day. It is so large that it was built on two levels. Grand Central Terminal in New York City is the world’s largest train station. It was built over the course of ten years from 1903 to 1913.
Grand Central Terminal located in New York City has two underground levels of tracks containing 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 tracks on the lower level. One of the most special features of this station is its secret platform.
There is also a secret platform below the Waldorf Astoria hotel next door to Grand Central Station. The belief is that this was used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to leave the hotel (after giving a speech) in his wheelchair but hidden from view. This abandoned platform was never used in regular service but as a loading point coincidentally under the hotel reads the statement on the official website of the Guinness World Records.
Being the largest railway station in the world the construction took 10 years to finish the project. It is noteworthy that it is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. The records indicate that an average of 660 Metro-North trains enter and exit the station daily carrying approximately 125000 passengers.
Located on over 48 acres this railway station exhibits a modern architectural style. It has a palace-like appearance which means that it is both a transit point and a tourist attraction. Many people visit the station not just to board their trains but to appreciate its charm and character. The station has also been featured in a number of Hollywood movies.
