IIT Kharagpur will no longer rely solely on JEE rank, and students will also receive admission based on their Olympiad and sports achievements. Let's learn the full details...

IIT Kharagpur, the country's top technical institute, plans to open a new pathway for admission to B.Tech and B.Sc. programs from the upcoming academic session. JEE Advanced exam rank will no longer be required, and students will be eligible for admission based on other criteria.

According to IIT Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty, the Senate has decided that from the next academic session, students will be admitted through alternative routes, but JEE Advanced will not be affected.

He says, "We are considering various options, such as Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) and Science Olympiad Excellence Admission (SCOPE). However, the final rules have not yet been finalized."

A key requirement of the alternative admission system will be that students qualify for the JEE Advanced exam, but their rank will not be decisive for admission. Its primary objective is to promote student diversity and provide opportunities to talented students from diverse fields.

Some other IITs, such as IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Gandhinagar, and IIT Indore, already offer admission to students who excel in Olympiads and sports. IIT Kharagpur is also moving in this direction.

According to reports, a committee with representatives from each department will be formed to determine the admission process modality and oversee implementation. The committee will study the protocols of other IITs and develop a suitable model.

The proposed Olympiad competitions include international-level competitions such as the International Mathematics Olympiad, International Physics Olympiad, International Chemistry Olympiad, International Biology Olympiad, and International Informatics Olympiad. Apart from this, some additional seats can be created for those students who have performed well in national and international Olympiads.
