How Championship table now looks after Sheffield Wednesday's massive points deduction

Sheffield Wednesday sit at the bottom of the Championship table on minus-six points after being hit by a major points deduction. The Owls were already perched 24th in the standings with just six points from their opening 11 outings.

However, they've been plunged into a deeper crisis as a result of filing for administration. The club is understood to owe £1million to HMRC as a result of paying late wages in five of the last seven months.

A statement from the EFL read: "The EFL can confirm that it has now received formal notice that Dejphon Chansiri, the director of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, has taken the necessary steps to appoint Administrators to both the Club and also the company which owns Hillsborough.

"Whilst this development results in the automatic deduction of 12 points in accordance with Regulations agreed by all Clubs, it also presents Sheffield Wednesday with the opportunity to move matters towards a successful sale and secure future under new ownership.

"The EFL will now engage in discussions with the Administrators in respect of the immediate actions required to enable them to achieve an early resolution, and end the ongoing uncertainty faced by Sheffield Wednesday staff, management, players, supporters and all those associated with the Club and their local community.

"The Championship League table will be updated with immediate effect."

On top of needing six points just to break even, Wednesday also have a goal difference of -14 to claw back as a result of shipping 23 and only scoring nine times this term. For context, 23rd-place Blackburn only have a goal difference of -8, while Norwich City have one of -5.

It's been a dismal start to the season for Henrik Pedersen, who assumed control of the first-team in the wake of Danny Rohl's departure in July. The Owls suffered a 2-1 loss to Leicester in their opening game of the campaign, before a 3-0 thrashing from Stoke City ensued.

A 2-2 draw with a newly-promoted Wrexham followed, before a 2-0 drubbing from Swansea and a 3-0 loss to Bristol City. Wednesday's first and only win of the season thus far then came in the form of a 2-0 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Draws with QPR and Birmingham, as well as losses to Coventry, Charlton and Middlesbrough have followed in the weeks since. It comes as Wednesday now face a tough test in a similarly struggling Oxford United on home soil at the weekend, with games against West Brom, Norwich and Southampton - as well as a Steel City derby - all on the horizon.
