Chaos ensued in California on Thursday (October 23, 2025) after two people sustained injuries when an "erratic" driver apparently tried to use his truck to ram into Coast Guard Base Alameda. According to officials, the place where the incident occurred was located on a small island next to Oakland, California.

The incident, which took place at 10 PM, prompted a shooting at Coast Guard Base Alameda. A driver was spotted "driving erratically" and apparently trying to use his truck to ram into Coast Guard Base Alameda, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said, according to ABC News.

Here’s what happened

Speaking about the incident on Friday, DHS cited Coast Guard personnel and stated that they were told that the driver was asked to stop multiple times, but to no avail, as he then allegedly put the truck in reverse and suddenly sped backwards toward the Coast Guard security officials.

"Law enforcement officers discharged several rounds of defensive live fire," which left the truck driver wounded in the stomach and a bystander struck by a fragment, DHS said, as quoted by ABC News. The department also confirmed that neither of the injuries was considered life-threatening.

The truck driver was taken for a mental health evaluation, and the bystander has been released from a hospital, DHS said. No Coast Guard personnel were hurt, DHS said.

FBI launches probe into the incident.

The FBI is investigating the shooting as an isolated incident. "Two individuals were injured in the incident, both sustaining non-life-threatening injuries," the FBI said in a statement.

"One of the individuals injured has been identified as a subject in the investigation. That subject has been released from the hospital and is currently in custody."
