New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki Jimny five-door have achieved a big milestone, going past 1 lakh units of export, displaying the appeal the made-in-India 4/4 has across the world. The compact SUV’s success outside is quite the opposite tale in the domestic market, where, since its launch in July 2023, the units have only mounted up to 27,812 units, just about 28 per cent of the total export numbers.

The Jimny five-door is made exclusively in India and has customers across 100 countries, with exports starting in 2023, right after their domestic debut. The compact off-roader is also exported to Australia, South Africa, Chile, Mexico, and Japan, its biggest markets.

In Japan, it has been a favourite, coming as ‘Jimny Nomade’ in January of this year. The orders went past 50,000 in just days after launch, a great response in one of the world’s best automobile markets.

In India, the tale is rather hopeless, with sales figures going only up to 296 units in September, plummeting from 599 units in the same period last year and a big drop from month-on-month numbers, with August 2025 recording around 603 units.

The starting price of the Jimny is set at Rs 12.32 lakhs, and the Jimny’s 4/4 aspect, lightweight off-roading prowess, attracts a small audience in the country. The vehicle is a lifestyle that appeals to urban buyers who like the image, of course. It is a perfect off-roader, well-suited for weekend getaways, but few would understand the appeal.

There is the brand name, which is for many a sign of decent fuel economy, but in real-world tests, Jimny’s average efficiency came to 12.8 kpl for the manual and 11.8 kpl in the automatic. In the urban surroundings, it isn’t best appreciated, and many feel a lifestyle car is a second option. It is strange how this car, so loved across the board, isn’t appreciated enough in the very country it is exclusively built in.
