Swollen Feet: In today’s busy life, swelling of feet has become a common but troublesome problem. Standing for long periods of time, sitting continuously, or traveling for hours—all of these have a direct impact on our feet. Swelling occurs when fluids accumulate in some part of the body. Under normal circumstances it is not harmful, but if swelling persists frequently or continuously, it can be a sign of some serious disease in the body such as a problem to heart, kidney or liver.
In Ayurveda, this problem is called ‘Sotha’, which arises from the imbalance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas. At the same time, according to modern science, swelling occurs due to obstruction in blood circulation, excess salt in the body, or stagnation of water. Both approaches believe that when the body’s natural balance is disrupted, fluids accumulate in the tissues, causing swelling. You can get relief from this problem through some Ayurvedic remedies which are as follows.
1. Immerse your feet in lukewarm water mixed with salt.
This is one of the simplest and effective home remedies. Soaking feet in lukewarm water with salt for 15-20 minutes provides immediate relief from swelling. Salt balances body fluids and helps remove excess water from skin pores. In Ayurveda it is called ‘Swedan Kriya’, which reduces both stiffness and swelling of the body.
2. Ice Cream
If there is pain and burning sensation along with swelling in the feet, then applying ice is very beneficial. According to science, cold temperatures constrict blood vessels, reducing fluid leakage and reducing swelling. In Ayurveda it is called ‘Sheetal Upchar’, which provides relief from both swelling and pain. Keep in mind that do not apply ice for more than 10–15 minutes.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is rich in potassium and anti-inflammatory properties, which helps in removing excess water from the body. In Ayurveda it is considered to balance the doshas. Soaking your feet with lukewarm water mixed with apple cider vinegar or lightly massaging it reduces both swelling and fatigue.
4. Use of ginger
Gingerol present in ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory element that reduces inflammation. Applying ginger juice on the affected area or drinking ginger tea improves blood flow and provides relief from swelling. In Ayurveda, ginger has been called ‘world medicine’, which balances Vata dosha and restores the energy of the body.
5. Turmeric milk
Curcumin found in turmeric is a powerful antioxidant, which neutralizes elements that cause inflammation in the body. Drinking turmeric mixed with warm milk before sleeping at night improves blood circulation in the body and reduces swelling. In Ayurveda, turmeric has been called ‘Haridra’, which purifies the blood and helps in eliminating inflammation from its roots.
Improvement in lifestyle is also necessary
Swelling of feet can be prevented not only by external measures but also by lifestyle improvements. It is very important to take a short walk every day, not sit in one position for too long, control salt intake, and drink enough water. Apart from this, sleeping with legs elevated also improves blood circulation and helps in reducing swelling.
