Vehicles coming from outside states will now be subject to a Green Cess in Uttarakhand. The Uttarakhand government has implemented the Green Cess to improve the state's air quality and promote road safety.
If you're planning to visit Uttarakhand in December 2025, it's crucial to know about an important change by the Uttarakhand government. Vehicles coming from outside states will now be subject to a Green Cess in Uttarakhand. To improve the state's deteriorating air quality, promote road safety, and improve road transportation, the Uttarakhand government has implemented the Green Cess.
The Uttarakhand government has issued an order regarding this. Let's explain how and where the Green Cess will be deducted, and why it's important to know everything about it before traveling to Uttarakhand.
How and where will the Green Cess be deducted?
According to the Uttarakhand State Transport Department, the Green Cess will be automatically collected through FASTags. As soon as any vehicle enters Uttarakhand, the Green Cess fee will be automatically deducted. To achieve this, 16 automated number plate recognition cameras have been installed at Uttarakhand's borders. These cameras will identify the vehicle and deduct the cess from the Fastag. These 16 locations include major border points like Kulhal, Asharodi, Narsan, Chidiyapur, Khatima, Kashipur, Jaspur, and Rudrapur.
What will be the Green Cess rates?
Regarding the Green Cess in the state, the department has set different cess rates for different vehicles. ₹80 for cars, ₹250 for delivery vehicles, and ₹140 for buses. The Green Cess rates for heavy vehicles are ₹120 per day, and for trucks, they range from ₹140 to ₹700 depending on their size. The government expects to generate approximately ₹100 to ₹150 crore in revenue annually from this system.
Which vehicles will be exempt?
According to the Uttarakhand Transport Department, two-wheelers (bikes and scooters), electric vehicles, government vehicles, ambulances, and fire brigade vehicles will not be subject to green cess in the state. Furthermore, if a vehicle re-enters the state within 24 hours, the cess will not be levied again.
Where will the funds collected from the green cess be used?
According to the Uttarakhand government, the funds collected from the green cess will be used to improve air quality, enhance road safety, and improve urban transportation. It should be noted that the Uttarakhand government had also announced the imposition of a green cess in 2024. However, it was postponed due to the inability to finalize the cess rates. Following this, it will now be implemented in Uttarakhand from December 2025.
