Andhra Pradesh is gearing up for the impact of Cyclone Montha , a severe cyclonic storm currently forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal. The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada on the evening or night of October 28, 2025. According to IMD, the approaching storm could bring extremely heavy rainfall, strong gusty winds, and localised flooding, making it one of the most significant weather events the state will face this year.

Cyclone Montha, pronounced as “Mon-Tha,” originated as a deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining southwest Bay. As of 2:30 AM on October 27, 2025, the cyclone was positioned approximately 600 km east-southeast of Chennai and 680 km south-southeast of Kakinada, moving steadily towards the Andhra Pradesh coast.

As per reports, Montha will strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90–100 km/h, gusting up to 110 km/h, before making landfall.

As per IMD, the cyclone’s effect will be felt intensely in districts like East Godavari, Krishna, and Guntur, while neighbouring regions including Yanam (Puducherry) and parts of Odisha may also experience heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Weather warnings and expected impactThe highlights extremely heavy rainfall, particularly in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam in Puducherry from October 27 to 29. Rainfall of 21 cm or more is likely at isolated locations, which could lead to flash flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions in transport and communication networks. Rayalaseema and Telangana are also expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging from 30–40 km/h.

Fishermen along the coast have been specifically cautioned against venturing into the sea, given the rough wave conditions and high winds predicted over the Bay of Bengal. Port authorities have issued advisories for the suspension of fishing and other maritime activities until the cyclone passes.

State government response and administrative measuresChief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, in a post on his official account on X, has called for the entire administrative machinery to remain on high alert. The Chief Secretary, K. Vijayanand, has directed all district collectors to activate control rooms, inspect cyclone shelters, and ensure that emergency supplies, including food, water, and medical kits, are readily available. Evacuation procedures have commenced in vulnerable coastal and island areas, prioritising children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those living in low-lying zones.

In anticipation of the storm, schools and educational institutions in several districts have been closed until further notice. Local transport authorities have advised people to limit travel, particularly in flood-prone areas. Schools will remain closed in Kakinada, Krishna, Bapatla, Guntur, Anakapalli, East Godavari, Annamayya, Kadapa, Eluru, Ambedkar Konaseema, and Palnadu.

Residents in affected districts are urged to stay indoors and secure their homes. Due to the cyclone’s intense nature, people living in coastal regions are advised to avoid visiting beaches, riverbanks, or embankments during the cyclone’s passage. Keeping the cyclonic conditions in mind, residents and travellers are also urged to avoid travel if not necessary. Citizens are advised to follow official IMD updates and heed advisories issued by local authorities, as the situation can change rapidly with the cyclone’s movement.

The formation of Cyclone Montha coincides with another weather system, a depression over the east-central Arabian Sea. The combined effect of these systems is expected to result in widespread rainfall, strong gusts, and potential disruption of daily life across several southern states. Experts caution that the cyclone could bring sudden surges in water levels along coastal areas, raising the risk of flooding in towns and villages situated near rivers and backwaters.

Cyclone Montha is shaping up to be a severe weather event with the potential to impact millions in Andhra Pradesh and surrounding regions. Residents are urged to remain informed through official channels, avoid unnecessary travel, and adhere to safety advisories until the storm passes.
