Toast will be 'crunchy but tender' if you ditch the toaster for 1 essential ingredient

Toast might be the simplest food to prepare, but it can turn out rather parched and tasteless if you're merely bunging it in a toaster. A toaster does the job if you're after a speedy breakfast, but toast is inherently quite boring, and you frequently need to slather on loads of butter if you want any taste whatsoever. This leads to toast that becomes incredibly waterlogged in the centre, while the crust remains hard and rubbery.

Nevertheless, Karen, the chef behind Soup Addict, has disclosed that toast is superior and boasts a far improved texture if you prepare it in a frying pan with a dash of olive oil instead. She explained: "I like bread out of the toaster as much as the next person, but if you're like me, you automatically reach for the butter or other condiments to moisten the bread. It's just better that way. With fried toast, there's a nice balance of crunchy texture and olive oil lusciousness."

Preparing bread with some olive oil will make the bread crispy, so you achieve a caramelised exterior rather than the crumbly toast you frequently get with a toaster, reports the Express.

The toast becomes more solid, which makes it simpler to support toppings without them slipping off or crumbling apart.

Karen continued: "Bread fried in olive oil becomes very, very sturdy, but not in the teeth-cracking way that you associate with, say, a crusty French baguette. The bread is crunchy... but tender. And it holds the weight."

Olive oil also enhances the toast's flavour as it blends with the bread while it cooks, making it more luxurious without having to smother it in butter. This incredibly straightforward recipe will transform your morning toast into a delightful breakfast treat rather than a rushed meal.

How to elevate your toast:

You will need:

  • One slice of hearty thick bread
  • One teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil
  • A 20cm frying pan

Method:

Firstly, place the frying pan on medium-high heat. You will know the pan is hot enough if you drop a little water into it, and it immediately sizzles or skips across the surface.

Drizzle the olive oil in zigzags on one side of the bread. The amount needed is only small enough to crisp up the bread and create a crust.

Place the bread in the centre, and the olive oil side touching the surface of the pan. Let it cook for two to three minutes, and use a spatula to check its progress.

Once the edges look singed, immediately turn it over. Once the second side is golden brown, place the bread on a plate and let it cool down.

Sprinkle a little salt on top, add your favourite toppings and your richer and crispier toast will be ready to serve.
