Weather Today
Today's Weather Forecast: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Cyclone Montha, classified as a “severe cyclonic storm”, is expected to make landfall today, October 28. The cyclone, formed over the Bay of Bengal, was centred near latitude 14°N and longitude 83.5°E late on Sunday night, with maximum sustained wind speeds between 90 and 100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.

According to the IMD, the system is currently positioned about 280 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 360 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 410 km south of Visakhapatnam, and 610 km south-southwest of Gopalpur. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and storm surges across multiple coastal and inland states.

Cyclone Montha landfall

The IMD said Cyclone Montha has intensified due to continuous moisture feed from the Bay of Bengal. The storm is expected to make landfall near Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada, between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, about 200 km from Odisha’s Malkangiri, by the evening or night of October 28.

In its latest statement, the IMD said, “Storm surge of height about 1 m above astronomical tide is likely to cause inundation over low-lying areas of coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam (of Puducherry) around the landfall time.” The department has also cautioned about flash floods in low-lying areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Cyclone Montha Rain Alert

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in different regions over the next three days.

October 28: Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Mahe, and coastal Karnataka are likely to receive heavy rain.
Until October 30: Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh are expected to experience widespread rainfall.

The IMD said weather conditions would remain severe until the end of October due to the strong circulation and moisture over the Bay of Bengal.

Weather Today: Red alert in Andhra Pradesh

A red alert has been issued in several districts of Andhra Pradesh, including Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Yanam, Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema, and West Godavari. Authorities have been asked to remain on high alert as “extremely heavy rainfall” is expected in the next two days. The red warning is likely to continue until October 30.

Weather Today: Red alert in Odisha

Odisha’s Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts are under red alert for heavy rainfall. The IMD has also issued orange and yellow alerts for nearby districts expected to face moderate impact from Cyclone Montha.

Weather Today: Orange alert in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, an orange alert has been issued for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Thiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram districts. Strong winds and heavy rains are likely in these areas as the storm progresses inland.

Red and orange alerts in Telangana

The IMD has issued a red alert for Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Mahabubabad districts of Telangana. Predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, the IMD also issued an orange alert for Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Khammam, Warangal, and Hanumakonda districts.

Today's Weather Forecast

Apart from the coastal states, Cyclone Montha’s influence is expected to extend into parts of West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Bihar over the next few days, bringing widespread rainfall and possible disruptions in some areas.

The IMD continues to monitor the storm’s movement closely and has urged state governments to stay prepared for emergency response and evacuation in vulnerable zones.
