Before the first T20 International match to be played between India and Australia, Indian team captain Suryakumar Yadav gave the latest information about the injury of batsman Shreyas Iyer. He told that Iyer’s condition is now stable and he is under the care of doctors in Sydney hospital.
Shreyas Iyer suffered a serious injury during a practice match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He ran towards backward point to take the catch of Alex Carey and took a brilliant catch, but during that time he fell badly on the ground on his ribs. After falling, he could not get up immediately, after which the medical team took him from the field on a stretcher and took him to the hospital.
Initial investigation suggested that Iyer’s ribs were injured, but later it was found that he had suffered a serious injury to his spleen. This was the reason why he was immediately admitted to the ICU so that doctors could continuously monitor his condition.
In the press conference a day before the match, Suryakumar Yadav said that when I came to know about Shreyas’s injury, I immediately called him. However, he could not talk on the first day because he did not have a phone. Later the team physio said that his condition is stable. Now I have been talking to him for the last two days and he is responding to texts, which means he is out of danger.
Surya further said that Iyer will be kept under observation for a few more days, but according to doctors the situation is under control.
The spleen is a soft organ located under the ribs on the left side of the body, which works to protect against infection and remove old red blood cells. It contains many blood vessels, so injury to it can sometimes be life threatening.
In mild injuries, there is only scratching or swelling, which heals on its own, but in case of serious injury, internal bleeding may occur, for which surgery may be required.
BCCI said that Shreyas was kept in ICU so that doctors could continuously monitor his condition for the first 48 hours. During this time it is seen whether any new bleeding is occurring or not. If the patient’s condition remains stable, he is gradually allowed to eat, drink and walk normally.
Often in such cases, the player has to stay in the hospital for at least a week, so that the doctors can ensure that the injury does not recur.
According to doctors, it may take 6 to 12 weeks to completely recover from spleen injury. During this period, the player has to stay away from any kind of physical activity or training, because even a minor shock can cause bleeding again. This means that Shreyas Iyer can stay away from cricket for about three months. He will return to the team only after becoming completely fit.
Iyer’s injury has dealt a big blow to the middle order of the Indian team. Suryakumar Yadav said that the team is focusing on maintaining the morale of all the players and is hoping for Iyer’s quick recovery.
