In fact, in February 2024, TRAI had proposed to launch a service called ‘Calling Name Presentation (CNAP)’. It was said that this feature will be on only when the customer requests it. After this DoT advised TRAI that this facility can be made available to users in default of Rs. However, anyone can request the termination of this service. Ultimately, TRAI accepted the view of the Department of Telecom. Both departments have now agreed on this decision. People who have taken Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR) facility will not see their name on the screen. This exemption will be specially given to intelligence agencies, VIPs and selected individuals. Any person applying for CLIR will undergo thorough vetting.
