The first T20I of the five-match series between India and Australia ended up being called off, with only 9.4 overs of play possible at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.

The five-T20I India and Australia series kicked off on Wednesday in Australia’s capital city. But rain cut short the match as India, after being inserted to bat first by Mitchell Marsh, were beginning to flex their muscle.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav, in particular, would have loved to carry on, as he was getting his form and rhythm back after what has been a scratchy time in international cricket for the Indian T20I captain.

Though his team has been on a winning streak since last year’s T20 World Cup, Suryakumar has been out of form: in 12 T20I innings in 2025, he’s managed just 139 runs at an average of 15.44 and a strike rate of 116, with only one score of more than 40, and the highest being 47*.

He was looking on course for his first T20I half-century after a year but had to walk back to the dressing room on 39* as rain played spoilsport in Canberra.

Suryakumar’s innings, though, would bring him lots of confidence and optimism that a big knock is just around the corner. In his 39* (24), Suryakumar pumped three fours and two sixes. This included a stunning flick shot sixer off the outstanding Josh Hazlewood.

Then, the Indian skipper picked up a slower ball from Nathan Ellis and deposited it over mid-wicket for his second six of the night.

With this, Suryakumar now has 150 sixes in T20I, becoming only the second Indian batsman, after Rohit Sharma, to reach this landmark. Suryakumar now has the fifth-most number of sixes in T20Is.
