The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), which is conducted for admission to the country's prestigious National Law Universities (NLUs), may soon see major changes. To make the examination system more transparent, fair, and modern, the Advisory Board, chaired by former Justice Indu Malhotra, has formed an Expert Committee. This committee will work on reforms to be implemented from 2027. The pattern could be similar to the USA's LSAT, for which the committee has sought suggestions.

The Expert Committee will prepare the outline of the reforms.
This committee includes leading legal academics from India and abroad. Professor Dev Saif Ganji (Oxford University) and Professor Tarunabh Khaitan (London School of Economics) have been appointed as co-chairs. Professor Shyamkrishna Balganesh (Columbia Law School), Professor Pritam Barua (BML Munjal University), and Professor Surabhi Ranganathan (Cambridge University) are also part of the committee.

Main Objective of the Committee
The committee's primary objective is to improve the quality, fairness, and relevance of the CLAT exam. This will involve a thorough review of the exam's question quality, sectional balance, syllabus, and evaluation system. The committee will also ensure that the exam accurately assesses students' aptitude and legal thinking.

The new CLAT will be inspired by international patterns.
The expert committee will conduct a comparative study of international exams such as the US LSAT and the UK LNAT. The objective is to identify which best practices from those exams can be implemented in the Indian CLAT to achieve a global standard.

Public Suggestions Sought
To make the changes to the CLAT exam more transparent, the committee has also sought suggestions from the public. Interested individuals can submit their thoughts, suggestions, or comments through a Google form. The deadline for submitting suggestions has been set from October 15, 2025, to November 4, 2025.
