An 83-year-old man from Pune died nearly a month after becoming a victim of digital arrest. According to the cyber police, the victim was a retired government official who was duped online of ₹1.2 crore by fraudsters posing as a CBI officer.
The incident came to light when his wife filed a complaint a week after her husband's death. Officials said that in August, the elderly man received a call in which the caller identified himself as an officer from the Colaba police station. He said that the elderly man's name had surfaced in a money laundering case.
When the victim denied the allegations, they were threatened by two other individuals over a video call. One identified himself as IPS officer Vijay Khanna, while the other claimed to be CBI officer Daya Nayak. Both men warned the couple that they would be arrested if they did not cooperate.
Money transferred to separate accounts.
They were then kept on a video call for hours and told that they had been digitally arrested. Under the guise of checking their bank accounts, the fraudsters coerced them into transferring a total of ₹1.19 crore to various accounts between August 16 and September 17. They were told the money would be returned after the investigation was complete.
According to the cyber police, upon learning of the incident, officials advised the couple to file an FIR, but they said they would do so after their daughter returned from abroad. Unfortunately, the elderly man suffered a heart attack a few days later and died. Police say a direct connection between the death and the fraud cannot be established, but an investigation is ongoing against the cyber fraudsters.
