Times are changing and with it the perspective of looking at love is also changing. While earlier physical closeness in relationships was considered the depth of love, today’s Generation Z, i.e. the generation born between 1997 and 2012, considers hand-holding in a relationship more important than sex.

This thinking is changing rapidly in India too. The new generation believes that physical relations in a relationship are no longer as important as holding hands. You may find it strange to hear this, but there are many reasons behind it. Let us know how this definition of love is changing and why?

The first stage of love was holding hands

According to the report published in India Today, in earlier times, especially for the Millennials and the generation before that, holding hands was considered a big step. During school or college days, even the slightest touch of fingers would increase the heartbeat. At that time it was first base and building a physical relationship was a very long process. But now the picture is completely reversed.

The era of dating apps and the changing mood of relationships

One Reddit user wrote, “I haven’t even held hands with as many people as I have had physical relations with.” This sentence completely describes today’s dating culture, where sex has become easy, but connecting with emotions is difficult. 22 year old Shreya Bhowmik from Jaipur said, ‘Sex is very easy and available for our generation. It is no longer an emotional thing. Today ‘one night stands’ or ‘no questions’ dates are common in big cities. But there is a big truth hidden behind this simplicity. People find it easier to open their body rather than their heart.

What do experts say?

Relationship expert says that ‘today’s youngsters keep their emotions more safe. Attention and emotions have now become the new currency. Holding someone’s hand, listening deeply, or being constantly present, all of these have more emotional weight than sex.

Why does holding hands matter more?

Holding someone’s hand is not just a symbol of romance, but also a symbol of trust and belonging. It says without speaking that ‘I am with you.’ Holding someone’s hand in difficult times gives more comfort than words. When you walk down the street holding hands with someone, it is a ‘statement’ that ‘this is my person.’ This is the reason why in today’s time this small gesture holds a huge emotional value.

What does science say?

According to psychology, when we hold someone’s hand, a hormone called oxytocin is released in our body, which is called love hormone. This hormone makes us feel relaxed, trust and belonging. While physical relationships often provide some temporary excitement, they do not always have an emotional connection.
