McLaren will auction off one of their 2026 F1 cars at the upcoming Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, marking the start of a historic string of sales that also includes an IndyCar and World Endurance Championship Hypercar chassis.

This auction was announced back in August, celebrating the team's history with the Triple Crown of Motorsport, being the only manufacturer to have won all three of the great races, and their intention to do so again. McLaren will return to the Hypercar class of the WEC in 2027, while their F1 and IndyCar operations continue to enjoy success at the highest levels.

"This auction is an extraordinary opportunity to own a piece of racing history and bid for a car that has competed on track before its official launch," Brown explained in the initial press release.

"The Triple Crown is a huge part of our heritage, and we are determined to claim it once again as we prepare for our 2027 entry into the World Endurance Championship. Not only that, these incredible cars will come with unprecedented VIP access to the team and action on track."

Now, the price has been set. RM Sotheby's has listed the auction with a price ranging from £7.6million ($10m) to £9.1m ($12m). The lucky winner won't receive their new toy, which will be a chassis used by either Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri in 2026, until the first quarter of 2028. However, a show car will be leased to the successful bidder in the meantime.

"Given the strict regulations conceived to prevent rivals from gaining access to relevant intellectual property (an element heightened by the technical regulation changes for the 2026 season), McLaren Racing will deliver the MCL40A to the winning bidder at the end of the first quarter of 2028," the listing explains.

"In the meantime, the team shall provide a 2025 non-running show car for display purposes. Once handed over to its private owner, the chassis may be used in designated demonstration runs and at track days, supported by a crew of McLaren Racing engineers and mechanics to fulfil operational and technical requirements of McLaren Racing, MHPP, the FIA, and the FIA's common suppliers in respect to the use of the Formula 1 car."

Before the auction takes place, however, McLaren have a lot still to fight for. Norris leads Piastri by one point in the Drivers' Championship standings following his statement win in Mexico City, while reigning champion Max Verstappen remains a threat, 36 points behind the Brit at the top of the order.
