Vice President of America J.D. Vance, while clarifying on the controversy over the religious conversion of his wife Usha Vance, has said that his wife has no intention of adopting Christianity. This statement comes after Vance made comments in a public forum that he hoped his wife would someday convert to Christianity.

Posting on social media platform vanes Wrote, “Usha is not a Christian and has no plans to convert, but like many interfaith marriages, I want her to see things the way I do one day.” He further wrote, “Despite this, I will continue to love and support her, talk to her about religion, life and everything else – because she is my wife.”

What did Vance say at the event?

This controversy started with the ‘Turning Point USA’ event held in Mississippi two days ago. A man at the event asked Vance if he wanted his wife to ever ‘accept Christ’. On this, Vance had openly said, “She comes to church with me most Sundays. Yes, I want her to feel the same thing that I feel in church someday. I believe in Christianity and I want her to understand it someday.”

Vance had said that religion is a very personal matter and despite differences of opinion, there is no tension in their relationship. He said, “Even if they don’t accept it, there is no problem. God has given free will.” The Vice President also made it clear that it is not right to run away from questions while being in public life, hence he answered honestly.

What did Usha Vance say?

Usha Vance, who is of Indian origin and follows Hindu religion, had talked about her interfaith family a few months ago. He had told in Meghan McCain’s podcast that both of them have adopted a balanced path regarding the religious education of children. Usha said, “We send our children to Catholic schools and let them choose whether they want to be baptized or not. It is completely their decision.”

Usha also told that when she and Vance got married, Vance was not a Catholic. Later, after having children, she adopted Christianity. He had clearly said, “I am not a Catholic and have no intention of changing my religion.”

Why did the matter escalate?

JD Vance holds America’s second highest constitutional post and is also in line for the presidency. In such a situation, his personal religious remarks again heated the American political and social debate, especially in a country where the sensitivity between religion and politics is very high.

It is clear from Vance’s latest statement that he wants to calm the controversy and want to send the message that there is no pressure or conflict regarding religion in his family.
