WhatsApp has launched a new passkey-encrypted backup feature to make chat backups more secure. This update is available for both iOS and Android users. Now, users can secure their chat backups with a fingerprint or Face ID. Let's learn more about it.

WhatsApp is the most widely used messaging app worldwide. The company regularly introduces exciting features for its users. WhatsApp has now added a new feature to further secure chat history. This feature now uses passkey-based encryption, making chat backups even more secure.

The company began rolling out the feature on Thursday. Instead of the hassle of managing a password or 64-digit encryption key, users will be able to protect their backups with a fingerprint, face recognition, or the phone's screen lock. Let's explain it in detail.

What does this update mean for users?

WhatsApp's new change further strengthens its existing end-to-end encryption system, which keeps personal chats and calls safe. Previously, users who wanted to encrypt their chat backups on Google Drive or iCloud had to create and maintain a separate password or key.

Now, with the new passkey option, this encryption will be directly integrated into your phone's security. With just a tap or face scan, you can save your backup and easily restore it later. The company says this will keep your backup completely private, even if you lose your phone or get a new one.

How to activate it?

This new WhatsApp feature will gradually roll out to all users over the coming weeks or months. To activate it, go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup and turn it on from there.
