Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued a major update regarding the use of Aadhaar card and its legal validity. This update will completely change the way Aadhaar card is used as an identity card. If you also use Aadhar card for every small and big work, then this news is very important for you. Come, let us know what are the new rules of Aadhaar in 2025 and how they will affect you.

Aadhar card will not be valid for these purposes

According to the latest orders of UIDAI and Government of India, Aadhaar card will no longer be used as the final proof for three main things – Citizenship, Domicile, and Date of Birth. This means that if you have to prove these things, you will have to show Birth Certificate, School Leaving Certificate or other valid documents.

Aadhaar will not provide proof of citizenship

UIDAI has made it clear that Aadhaar card or its authentication will not be considered as proof of Indian citizenship. If you have to prove Indian citizenship for any government or private service, then you will have to provide passport or other citizenship documents. Aadhaar will no longer help in this work.

Aadhaar is not enough for proof of residence

If you have to provide proof of being a permanent resident (domicile) in any state or territory, then Aadhaar card will not be considered as a conclusive document. For this you will have to submit documents like domicile certificate or residence certificate. Aadhaar alone will not meet this need.

No final proof of date of birth

According to the new rules of UIDAI, the date of birth recorded in the Aadhar card will not be considered as the final proof of birth. If you have to prove your date of birth, documents like birth certificate or school leaving certificate will be mandatory.

What is the significance of the new rules of Aadhaar?

The main objective of Aadhaar is to provide a unique identity and to ease e-KYC or subsidy distribution in government schemes. Since Aadhaar card can be issued to any person resident in India, even if he or she is not an Indian citizen, it is not considered proof of citizenship or residence. These rules have been brought to prevent misuse of Aadhaar and clarify its validity.

Other important updates for you

Strictness on duplicate basis

UIDAI has clarified that if a person has more than one Aadhaar number, only the one issued first will be valid. All other Aadhaar numbers will be cancelled. So, if you have a duplicate Aadhaar, check it immediately and take necessary steps.

Fee increased for Aadhaar update

The fee for Aadhaar update has been increased from October 2025. Now you will have to pay Rs 75 for demographic updates like name, address or date of birth and Rs 125 for biometric updates. Be prepared to spend more than before.

Last date for PAN-Aadhaar linking

If you have not yet linked your PAN card with Aadhaar, do it quickly. PAN-Aadhaar linking is mandatory till 31 December 2025. If this is not done, your PAN card will become inactive from January 1, 2026, due to which you may have to face many problems.
